Board of Trustees Spotlight

Dr. Michael Landi

The Kenmore Mercy Foundation is very blessed to have a strong Board of Trustees that volunteer their time to help the organization reach its goals. Many of you know Michael Landi, MD, FACS, CEO of Brain and Spine Medical Services, PLLC, Chief of Neurological Surgery at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Vice President of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees.

Originally from Evanston, Ill., Dr. Landi relocated to Buffalo in 1988. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering and his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His training in general and neurological surgery was also completed in Buffalo. Dr. Landi received additional specialized training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and training in gamma knife radio surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at University at Buffalo.

Dr. Landi’s strong clinical and research interests in minimally invasive surgical techniques have resulted in numerous United States patents and national awards for developing new technology. He is the inventor of the Minrad laser targeting system used in spinal surgery internationally. His research has been presented at national and international scientific meetings and published in numerous scientific articles.

He has been a key leadership figure and long time financial supporter of Kenmore Mercy Foundation and has involved the Brain and Spine Center in sponsoring numerous events such as Tribute to Angels Gala & The Bob A. Saldanha Memorial Golf & Wine Event.

If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Dr. Landi at hospital functions, please take a moment to introduce yourself and say thank you!

 Golf Tournament Still at Par

Despite tough economic times and a cold rainy day, The Bob A. Saldanha Memorial Golf and Wine Event to benefit Kenmore Mercy Hospital netted a record $157,000 in its fifth year.

Held at Legends on the Niagara in Ontario, Canada on June 18, the tournament, which includes two 18-hole golf flights and a VIP wine tour and tasting, has traditionally sold out. While the number of participants remained the same as in previous years, donations increased by seven percent over the last year.

Event co-chairs Richard (Dick) Penfold, and Anne Saldanha, MD, wife of the late Robert “Bob” A. Saldanha, along with the event committee are pleasantly surprised with the results. “We are thrilled and very touched that our wonderful community can continue to give to such levels to support Kenmore Mercy Hospital.”

The tournament was sponsored by HSBC and other sponsors including the Penfold family, Petri Baking Products, Inc., the Habib Family and the Saldanha Family. Save the date for next year's event to be held on June 17!

Vital Check Machine Funded Through Mini Grants Program

In May, the Kenmore Mercy Foundation funded the purchase of a new Vital Check Machine to be used in an isolation room on 3 East.

The Vital Check Machine takes a patient’s vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature along with oxygen saturation on a regular basis.

Kathy Vitthuhn, Director of Patient Care Services explained, “This equipment will increase the ability of the patient care staff to have continued access for monitoring patients. It is our intention to keep this Vital Check Machine in an isolation room.”

Kathy added, “This new equipment will allow our staff to continue providing the excellent care we strive for on a daily basis.”

The Vital Check Machine was awarded through the Mini Grants Program sponsored by the Kenmore Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees.

Four Associates Attend National Conference

In June, Julie Metcalfe, Karen Burl, Amy Hurr, and Kristin Davidson (pictured right) from Coding attended the New York Health Information Association’s annual conference which was held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel.

NYHIMA is a non-profit organization whose membership consists of Health Information Management professionals employed in hospitals and other health care settings throughout New York State. NYHIMA has been dedicated to promoting the professional excellence of its members through education, advocacy, and alliances, thereby ensuring quality health information to benefit the public, the health consumer, providers, and other users of clinical data.

Attendance at the conference was funded through the Foundation’s Staff Education Program. The Kenmore Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees has set aside $25,000 in 2009 to help provide our associates with the tools needed to better assist their patients’ needs.
